Between Golf Course and Runway
Robert Wunsch belongs to the international fashion community – he was a founding member of the media platform „High Snobiety“ and was the creative director for years . For over 12 years Robert has been photographing fashion and lifestyle and is an expert when it comes to trends and fashion. Now, ECCO GOLF has collaborated on a fashion editorial with Robert to show that the Danish brand’s shoes do not only make a good impression on the course – they are just as stylish off it.
NYLON: Golf is a popular sport with a long tradition – would you say that there is a moment of hype around the sport right now?
Robert Wunsch: I would definitely say yes. Especially through young YouTubers like Good Good or Bob Does Sports, the hype has taken on a completely new dimension. Also internationally – unlike in the US, where there are many golf courses for the public, golf has always had a much more elitist reputation in Europe. This narrative is now slowly but surely being broken down, also with the help of clubs that are opening the doors to a younger and less status-conscious target group with new concepts and pricing policies.
Why are musicians like Macklemore, DJ Kahled or Nick Jonas devoting themselves to golf right now?
I think that athletes and musicians in particular have always pursued golf. ProAm and celebrity tournaments have a long tradition, especially in the USA. But today it is much more present through social media and YouTube, even for people who are otherwise hardly or not at all touched by the sport.
“YouTubers and celebrities breaking down the old dress codes and rules of conduct have ensured that golf is now rooted in broad sections of society”
What standing does golf have in pop culture?
I think the cards are being completely reshuffled, especially due to the developments in the USA in recent years. The popularity of Long Drive Championships, TopGolf and similar facilities, or YouTubers, the breaking down of old dress codes and rules of conduct have ensured that golf is now rooted in broad sections of society. Not to mention the media hype caused by the LIV vs. PGA drama. It will be interesting to see how much of this spills over to Europe and the rest of the world in the next few years.
Whether preppy or sporty, golf has long since arrived in fashion. How big is the influence of golf on current trends?
I personally think that there is still a lot of room for growth. Some brands are already taking the first steps, but when it comes to swag and style, there is still a lot of room for progress, and it will be interesting to see how this develops in the coming years.
